My Story
In January 2015, I heard all of the words you never want to hear in one sentence – cancer, metastasis, primary, secondary, surgery, chemo, radiation. I had late stage thyroid cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. The prognosis was grim –6 months if I had no treatment and 12- 18 months if I had surgery and Chemo.
So who am I and what do I have to offer you? I can give you the benefit of my experience, knowledge gained along the way, professional study to help you find that becoming aware, creating balance and having choices, regardless of your situation, leads to a much healthier, happier life.
You might say, I have taken a road that, so far, is less traveled in that I CHOSE to nurture every aspect of my body and being, allowing my body to do what it is designed to do and heal itself. That is, without surgery, chemo or radiation. I have documented my journey and can now share the process I used to bring me back into a healthy, joyous and full life. This includes my work life as well.
It took a huge health challenge for me to change everything about my life. The diagnoses, was frightening but what was more frightening, was how irrelevant I was made in that process. At no stage did anybody ask me how I wanted to treat or deal with this. In fact, appointments were made without my consent for scans, needle biopsies, oncology etc. My mind was spinning as I found myself on board the medical merry-go-round. I felt powerless and felt the burdening pressure from being pushed in a direction that convention said I was to go. It’s not that I am against conventional medicine, I think it has a place but just not for me as my first and only option. You can’t un-ring the surgery bell so I really wanted that whole conventional medicine path to be my last resort. However, my Doctor was insisting that this is the only way to treat cancer. With that in mind, I chose to take back my power, step off the merry go round and take a seat on the roller coaster.
That was my first experience with choice and I then set about making myself aware. The internet educated me on all things cancer and the immune system and before too long, I had information that I could make choices with. Importantly, using my natural born instincts to direct me to what was best for me. I found undisputed research that supported the knowledge that we have cancer in our body everyday but the immune system takes care of it. I chose to set up a balanced lifestyle that would support my immune system which meant changing everything, and I mean everything! I had to evaluate how I had compromised my immune system and then reverse it.
More than four years on and I am happier and healthier with cancer than I ever was without it. I am still on the roller coaster, changing and evolving, learning and stumbling, most of all growing, going with the ups and downs, enjoying the ride and just being me.
